BOARD OF DEACONS
Senior Deacon: Christine Woods
Junior Deacon: Perry Klein
Secretary: Lucy Anderson
Staff Liaison: Jared Wortman and Christopher Goodson
Mission from Bylaws:
The Board of Deacons will assist the pastors in performing
services and Plymouth's spiritual activities for Plymouth and the
community, including assisting in preparing and administering
the sacraments; receiving and depositing open collections;
appointing ushers; leading the Congregation in caring for the
poor, the sick, the sorrowing and the stranger; and performing
other duties requested by the Senior Pastor.
Major Events/Achievements in 2024-2025:
The Board of Deacons practiced radical hospitality throughout
the year by welcoming attendees to church services, special
events and funerals, aiding with worship service logistics,
assisting with the preparation and distribution of the elements of
the Lord’s Supper, and serving behind-the-scenes to ensure the
Plymouth building, services, and tone demonstrated radical love
and operational excellence. Specifically, the Deacons:
• Led the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, providing
fellowship opportunities and pancakes for more than 500
people, and raising over $4,000 for the Plymouth’s Good
Samaraitan Fund.
• Provided support for Saturday evening and Sunday worship
services during this program year.
• Throughout the program year Deacons provided a warm
welcome and sincere sympathy to families and friends at 16
funerals. Flower stands and card boxes were purchased with a
grant from the Plymouth Foundation for use when no Funeral
Home is present. These items have provided a nice touch to
the services.
• Deacons have served at several concerts and public gatherings
being held at Plymouth Church.
• Developed a Ministry Action Plan in alignment with
Plymouth's strategic plan with the following goals identified
for priority action.
− Define and reorganize how our “committee’s” work together
to better include all three years of Deacons and share the
responsibilities. Possibly change the name to Deacon Teams,
so not confused with other types of Committees within
Plymouth structure. Status: Work in Progress
− Define and document the responsibly/actions needed
during an emergency at Plymouth (health crisis, fire,
tornado, active shooter). Provide training for the Deacons
on Crisis Preparation and Response. Update our emergency
26
information to make it more visible to the deacons and
edit the picture page of medical personnel to more
accurately reflect those medical personnel who are regular
attendees. Status: Complete
− Reevaluate and update the Board of Deacons' mission
statement to more accurately represent our purpose, values,
and objectives. The existing mission statement is a mixed
collection of duties rather than a clear declaration of our
purpose and values. It's uncertain whether some of the
duties listed are still in practice. Status: Work in Progress
− Decorated the exterior of the church for Thanksgiving.
− Served five separate Christmas Eve services, including
serving communion during the 11 a.m. service.
