soil for new life to grow in. Compost is the material manifestation of the
resurrection of the dead – a resurrection that is already happening. The
poet Walt Whitman was awed by the fierce alchemy of compost as a sign of
the Earth’s capacity to repair itself in the wake of corruption and civil war.
Writer Jeff Chu takes inspiration from the worms that metabolize what is
unwanted or deemed unworthy into something necessary and beautiful.
As we prepare for the Earth to awaken with new life, Lent invites us to
participate in the work of healing creation and supporting livable futures.
As grandiose as that may sound, it can be as simple as partnering with the
tiny critters in your backyard.
