Devotion 2
Inspiration
In all this I have given you an example that by such work we must support
the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, for he himself said, ‘It is
more blessed to give than to receive.’ – Acts 20:35
Reflection
There are three words that quickly describe my consideration of Faith in
Action. The first word is awareness of our individual and communal needs
rolled up in a bundle of diversity, equity, and inclusion – proactively looking
for spaces and places that will bring comfort and understanding to others.
Since the 1970’s, I have worked within the LGBTQIA+ city of Des Moines to
make it a more welcoming and safer place for others. The second word would
be prayer. I consider my actions to be a form of prayer for a world in need of
hope, joy, peace, and love. This prayer became intrinsic to my soul and is how
I interact with others. And finally, altruism is at the heart of it all. Being in
service to others is the highest calling, and knowing this has been one of my
greatest blessings. The message is to treat others as you wish to be treated.
Action in Contemplation
Remember a moment when you felt truly welcome and completely able
to be yourself. How did that feel for you, and how can you extend that
welcome to others today?
