SOLVING THE PROBLEM WITH SENIOR LIVING
By Sarah Anne Sutter
And on the fourteenth day, God created nursing homes.
And pronounced them "good" as well.
On the one million, four hundred and seventy two thousandth
day, God took a second look.
“It's missing something, but what?”
On that day God created GLP-1s and Botox.
“If the seniors are skinny and pretty, they would be treated better.”
On the second day, Private Equity got involved.
“Look at their record in business. Truly prophets of their time.”
On the third day, budgets were slashed.
“Necessity breeds innovation”
On the fourth day, AI for all insurance pre-approvals.
“Take the human out of the human condition”
On the fifth day a campus-wide wellness weight loss challenge
“Blessed are the humbled and hungry for they shall inherit
the earth.”
On the sixth day there was a pizza party.
Thus, God reviewed the key performance indicators and saw that
it was very good.
On the seventh day, God took some true unplug time to recharge
and refresh.
The Manager on Duty remained available for any urgent issues.
THE GATHERING
By Sarah Anne Sutter
The renegades sat around the fire,
coffee cups in hand,
LLCs at their sides,
sharing encouragement and lessons learned,
clandestine whispers of places they were no longer welcome.
They all answered the call,
patient advocacy, preventing falls in the home,
because it feeds their soul.
Sarah Anne Sutter draws from her
experience working in senior living
communities to shed light on the emotional
realities of care work and the systemic
shortcomings of the elder care industry.
