Memories
By Jack Porter
Once so clear, but now a faded past.
A mother’s love
A father’s scorn
A sister’s cry
A brother’s taunt
A cherished toy, a marble or car perhaps.
A photo of a summer’s fun.
A note from a love’s long past.
So many then, but so few now.
How will we share a life of memories?
A thought perhaps or even a story but who will listen or care?
The memories are mine and yours.
Hour by hour, day by day, year by year.
Some sad but most happy.
But who will listen or care?
A mother’s love a memory of sweet care, cherished
given wholly and completely – no reservation – no conditions.
A father’s demand given with a stern rebuke but a twinkle in
his eye,
a proud, caring, hard but knowing, wise above all.
A sister’s cry over a broken doll or from a deep disappointment
– in you perhaps?
A brother’s dare to taunt or perhaps to show the way but always
by your side.
Memories of dinners and holidays, fireworks and presents, ice
cream treat and oyster stew.
Once so bright and soon to be no more than a dim light.
Our life is a memory. A book to read – to share – to tell.
Full of chapters of births and deaths, loves and hates, shouts,
and whispers.
Vibrant, full of color and smells.
Full of all those things that were so long ago or yesterday.
Some to be kept, some to be shared, some cherished, some
not so much.
