Glass artist Tilda Brown Swanson lives and works in her studio
in Des Moines, Iowa. She received her BA in Applied Math and
Computer Studies from Northwestern University, Evanston
IL and her MS in Computer Science from Stanford University,
Palo Alto CA. While in graduate school and working in
technology in Silicon Valley, she started making art with glass,
learning glass techniques by apprenticing with Italian-born glass
master (now of Mexico) Narcisco (Narcissus) Quagliatta in
Oakland CA from 1994-95 and in sessions at Pilchuck Glass
School, Stanwood, WA. She opened her own studio in 1995
and has worked full-time with glass since 2006. Her medium is
multi-layered fused glass held in steel and wooden frames.
“I draw myself and viewers into the beauty of glass to find sanctuary
and healing. By bringing light through my glass, I enable viewers
to slow down and explore the many moods of our surroundings."
Brown Swanson exhibits her artwork regularly, including
recently at Jester Park Lodge, Granger, IA; Alexandria Museum
of Art, Louisiana; d’Art Center, Norfolk Virginia; Wickford Art
Gallery, North Kingston Rhode Island; and Figge Art Museum,
Davenport, IA. Her work is in private and corporate collections
in the US, UK, and Gibraltar.
